Member Monday: Two Vacations Were Barely Enough for These Adventurers

Amy D. and her family of six from Elgin, IL, took advantage of their Global Discovery Vacations Expressway weeks and stayed in two Arizona condos, the Villas of Sedona then Scottsdale Villa Mirage, in two consecutive weeks. This was the perfect locale for Amy and her adventurous family with hiking and sightseeing galore. She shares those experiences in today’s Member Monday feature.

Where would you recommend a fellow member to go for:
Scottsdale, AZ, Villa Mirage Condo: Has a great old western town nearby. It was not expensive and fun to see and visit. The mining trip was worth it! We enjoyed spending our days at the resort pool and tennis courts. We are not tennis players but had fun with the new experience. We would have hiked if it wasn’t so hot when we were there. We love the places to hike.

Villas of Sedona, AZ: We enjoyed lots of hiking nearby, many hiking options! Slide Rock is a must! Just get there when it opens and you are good to go. The Crestview Community church was fantastic! Great service and people! Downtown was nice to walk and look and play. Local shops are nice, and the scenery from anywhere is captivating. We loved the West!

Go to the Grand Canyon (if the government opens it again)! It’s not far, and well worth the drive. Hike at least half way down. Bring hiking shoes and backpacks with water.

To Eat
Scottsdale: Grocery shopping was nearby, so we just ate in. We went out one night to a local place for drinks, dinner and karaoke at Ernie’s Restaurant and Bar in Scottsdale. Food was great and it had a fun atmosphere!

Sedona: We ate at a downtown restaurant that looked good, and enjoyed trying the sampler platter of local foods like rattlesnake, cactus and buffalo. We all got to taste it, so it was fun. It was pricey for us but worth it because of the view and the atmosphere; we ate outside.

To have fun/attractions
Grand Canyon, Slide Rock, any hiking trail you can find! Hike them all! Hike by Snoopy Rock!

What was your favorite:

Resort Amenity:
Scottsdale: We loved the pool, the pool games, grilling area and washer and dryer in the unit! The fitness room was so nice!

Sedona: The condo was laid out nicely and felt warm and inviting! The pool and game room was nice as well.

Place to go in the destination
If you only stay in Scottsdale, then plan a day to visit Sedona. And plan a day to go to Slide Rock! It’s not far and worth the drive.

The Montezuma Castle was so cool! Near Sedona.

Why did you choose this destination?
Because it looked fun and we had never been to Arizona!

Who did you travel with, family or friends?
Our family of 6.

Were you traveling for a special occasion? If yes, what?
For fun!

What was your favorite memory of your vacation?
All the trips hiking and Slide Rock! Laughing and being together as a family! We all enjoyed our time together! We laughed so much!

The drive there and home was a favorite as well! We drove straight through, no stops at hotels, from Chicago to Sedona. We took the long scenic route through Colorado and through the desert. We stopped at “Four Corners” and by the time we got to Sedona, we felt like we had accomplished a huge life milestone and loads of fun and memories!

We drove home a different route, through Texas and New Mexico, straight through. I highly recommend this! We have four kids ages seven to 16, and they had a ball, all stuck in a minivan! Hilarious!

Any tips for a traveler to this resort destination?
Hike and enjoy God’s creation! Bring hiking shoes, clothes and backpacks!

Any tips for a traveler staying in this condominium?
Scottsdale: Just bring laundry soap to do laundry.

Sedona: Plan on quarters for the laundry machines.

Anything you think they should bring?
Hiking boots and backpacks.

Additional Comments:
We used our Expressway weeks and just picked a spot that we saw available. It was perfect planning about 2 months ahead of time. It was an off-season time for the place and we love it when it’s not crowded.

About you

How long have you been a Global Discovery Vacations member?
One year.

Why did you join the club?
We have never taken many vacations with our family of six. It was too expensive. Now that our kids are older it is the perfect time to invest in travel and driving. We wanted to invest in it so we forced ourselves to go spend time together and have no excuses! The price was right and we heard about it at the right time.

What is your profession?
Dance coordinator and instructor.

How many trips have you taken using your membership?
We have gone to two resort locations in Arizona. We are headed on our second trip to Colorado this winter. We always wanted to go to Colorado and ski. We put in a request as soon as we got our membership. We requested two weeks at a condo in Colorado during Christmas break, 14 months before the requested date. We found out we got it in June!
