Global Discovery Vacations Review: Member Wowed by Depth of New Orleans

Originally going to New Orleans for a bachelorette party, Global Discovery Vacations member Jackie S. learned that the city is much more than a good time. She took advantage of many of the attractions that makes the Big Easy such a delight and shared her tips in this week’s Member Monday.

Where would you recommend a fellow member to go to…
Eat:
Acme Oysters on Iberville in the French Quarter. Try this New Orleans staple all kinds of ways – fried, char-grilled or as a shooter. Satisfaction guaranteed.

If oysters are not your thing, then try a variety of gourmet meals at St. Roch Market in the Bywater District. It’s a farm to table food court (the Mexican street corn is amazing)!

Shop:
There are so many souvenir shops all along the main streets – it’s too hard to pick just one!

Have fun/attractions:
Wild Louisiana Tours offers a great kayaking tour of the Manchac Swamp.

For just $3, you can get a day pass and ride the street car up Saint Charles Ave. for a view of uptown New Orleans and all it’s mansions.

A lazy cruise down the Mississippi River on the Steamboat Natchez is well worth the time.

An evening on Frenchman St. where all the jazz bands play is a must!

What was your favorite…
Resort/Condo Amenity:
The hot tub at La Belle Maison is just that – hot. It was lovely to soak in after a long day of walking.

La Belle Maison staff were so friendly, the condo was an impressive size and perfect for four persons. I would really love to return one day.

Place to go in the destination:
Pop into the Hotel Monteleone for a drink at the Carousel Bar. The bar is an actual carousel that turns. It’s beautiful. Café Du Monde is the best place for coffee and beignets. It’s 24 hours so there’s no rush.

Why did you choose this destination? Were you traveling for a special occasion?
It was a bachelorette party weekend, and New Orleans was chosen so we could let loose on Bourbon Street. However, we discovered New Orleans is so much more when we actually go there. The jazz, the street performers, the art and the history took us in. Now we are hooked.

What was your favorite memory of your vacation?
Spending some time eating beignets at Café Du Monde – don’t hesitate to have a powdered sugar fight. We didn’t.

Any tips for a traveler going to this resort or destination? Anything you think they should bring?
Keep in mind the condo at La Belle Maison does not have a stove or oven, so any meals must be microwavable.

Also, take some time to hang out in the car drop off. They have a lovely set up with a TV and popcorn at 1 p.m. The parking staff is also quite entertaining.

Additional Comments:
Everyone should visit New Orleans at least once, and the La Belle Maison was a lovely place to stay. This city is so historic, so flavorful, so artsy and it’s people so kind.
