Global Discovery Vacations Review: 2017 Was a Year to Remember for this Family!

What a year member Jacquie J. had, as she chronicled her entire 2017 in travel for this week’s Member Monday. Despite only becoming a Global Discovery Vacations member less than a year ago, her family combined for a total of nine (!) vacations in 2017. And there’s sure to be plenty more to come!

Here’s Jacquie’s above-and-beyond review of her first year as a GDV member:

Jacquie: I make resolutions each year and I do a pretty good job of keeping to them. As a resolution for 2017, I made it a goal to take a flight somewhere each month. I wanted to make good use of the non-revenue travel benefits I have as a parent of an airline employee. By flying non-revenue, the flights I take are free to minimum cost. Usually, my travel consists of day trips. More than once, I wished there was a way I could top off my travel with low-priced lodging.

How did you become a member?

Visiting historic Jamestown, Virginia.

In early 2017, I attended a travel show held at the convention center in my area. My interests were piqued when I came across the Global Discovery Vacations booth and I had a hunch GDV was the missing piece that I needed to compliment my travels. My husband and I purchased an Elite Membership in April of 2017.

Though I felt GDV was a perfect fit for us, some reviews I came across caused me to become skeptical about this travel club. I also wondered how many years it would take us to recoup the cost we paid for our membership. I knew the only way to address my concerns was to put GDV to the test.

I asked my son to be our trailblazer. In July, he took the first trip, destination Sea Mountain in Punalu’u Hawaii HI. When he arrived, he texted me, “It’s amazing! This is exactly what I needed!”

I was reassured that I made the right decision and was ready for my adventures to begin!

Collectively, my family lodged at nine resorts in a five-month period in 2017:

Traveler Destination Resort
Son Punalu’u, Hawaii Sea Mountain
Mike & Jacquie Kailua Kona, Hawaii Wyndham Kona Hawaiian Resort
Son Quepos Costa Rica Pueblo Real
Mike & Jacquie Williamsburg, Virginia Wyndham Patriots’ Place
Mike & Jacquie N. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina Harbourgate Marina Club
Mother Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii Royal Kuhio
Son Banff, Alberta, Canada Banff Rocky Mountain Resort
Jacquie Madeira Beach, Florida Belle Vista
Son Stateline, Nevada Tahoe Summit Village

Which resorts stood out to you?

We enjoy and purpose our trips for different reasons, be it a visit with family, hiking, snowboarding, a bucket list checkoff, sightseeing, and/or relaxation and restoration. Our rating would include these factors plus the comfort and amenities offered at the resort and it proximity to what we want to see and do.

Our scale of satisfaction is simple: Would I recommend it to a friend and would I go there again?

Speaking for my husband and me, we would recommend to a friend the resorts we stayed, with the exception of Harbourgate Marina Club. Our reasoning has nothing to do with the property itself, but a “member error.” This was not only my first reservation, but also the first Special Buy. Rookie mistake – I rushed to reserve the condo without first mapping out its location against the residences of the family we were visiting. In hindsight, I realize there were several properties we could have chosen closer to family.

Using my rating system, I asked my son for his destinations assessment. He said he would absolutely go again and recommend them to friends. His videos capture the wonderful time he had in Banff. He also wanted to give a shout out to the great staff at Banff Rocky Mountain Resort.

My mother? She’s already planning her trip for next year – same island, same resort! It feels my heart to see her so excited, encouraged and happy. She absolutely had a fabulous time.

I think it is apparent that my family loves to travel. It affords you a deeper appreciation of a life lived. You have an opportunity to learn, explore, remove boundaries, and see the world from a different vantage point and so much more.

Travel Tips

There are apps for just about anything: Maps, packing, journals, discounts, destinations, etc. I find them very useful.

Oh, concerning how long it would take us to recoup our money: We surpassed it 1.5 times by the end of 2017! We saved an incredible amount of money and gained wonderful memories during the fabulous times we had at each location. I am happy to be a member of GDV and look forward to future travels!
