5 Destinations You Need to Visit in 2017

Now that 2016 is just about in the books, most of us are already looking ahead to 2017. New beginnings, new resolutions, new experiences. Everyone wants the next year to be better than the last, and why should vacations be any different?

If you haven’t planned your vacation for next year and are having trouble deciding on a good location, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve listed some of our favorite places to consider when booking your 2017 Global Discovery Vacations vacation.

Palm Springs, California

The California desert has seen a resurgence the past few years, with scenic canyons, Agua Caliente Cahuilla Indian culture and modern events, such as Coachella and the Springs International Film Festival. I’m taking the scenic route, riding the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway up Chino Canyon, taking a smorgasbord of historic trails along the way. Continue your outdoor adventures on the interstellar terrain of Joshua Tree National Park and at the San Andreas Fault.

South Padre, Texas

Now that we’re offering the Solare Condominiums and Solare Garden Villas throughout 2017, you can see the south side of the Lone Star State in style. A popular Spring Break destination (book those weeks ASAP!), South Padre is a great beach getaway no matter when you head down. With the nationally recognized sea turtle rehabilitation center (Sea Turtle, Inc.) and ideal spots to view dolphins and whales, the whole family will love their stay.

Gatlinburg, Tennessee

The Smoky Mountains attract millions of visitors each year, so we hardly ever have to promote this destination. But the recent fires affected thousands of people and businesses, leaving many to wonder how this would affect tourism. The best way to keep this delightful community thriving is to visit and support the local businesses and artisans.

White Oak Lodge and Resort still stands, as do many popular attractions: Dollywood, Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies and the Island at Pigeon Forge, to name a few. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is still recovering, but you can monitor trail and road closures HERE. Also, Asheville, North Carolina (home of the Biltmore Estate), is just an hour and a half away for more sightseeing options.

Lake Tahoe

Yes, we had it in our list for 2016, but it deserves another slot here as you voted Lake Tahoe your favorite Global Discovery Vacations destination. What makes it so fabulous? Probably the fact that you can do almost anything while you’re there: ski, hike, swim, gamble, eat, sleep and relax. Whether you stay on the north or south side, on the California or Nevada side, it’s all stunning.

Northern Michigan

Just because we tell you to go north doesn’t mean we’re asking you to give up the sun and surf. Quite the opposite: The Traverse City area boasts 181 miles of gorgeous shoreline and almost 150 inland lakes in which to play, such as the popular Clinch Park Beach. And when the weather gets cold, grab a pair of skis and hit up Shanty Creek’s 50-plus slopes. With historic Mackinac Island a ferry ride away, there’s no shortage of ways to spend a vacation in Northern Michigan.

A new year means new experiences, and though these places will offer a bunch of experiences, they aren’t the only places you can travel. Log on to your member’s-only website or give us a call for even more ways to spend your 2017 vacation.

  1. We have visited the first three destinations as Global members. I agree that Palm Springs deserves to be on the list. I didn’t think I would like the desert but it was beautiful and a fun place to vacation. And of course Gatlinburg is like a second home to us. Looking forward to exploring Northern Mivhigan.

    • That’s fantastic, we’re glad to hear that you’ve already been to some places on this list! We can’t wait to hear about more of your travels.

  2. Understand that Pictured Rocks is 2hrs 45 mins away from Harbor Springs. Also I would recommend visiting in August. It gets cold in the UP of Michigan

  3. Great to see northern Michigan getting some love. The kayak trip around pictured rock is a must do

  4. We love Gatlinburg and White Oak Lodge. Planning a trip also to Island Links in Hilton Head. Ideas appreciated for things to do.

  5. We are currently (1/3/17) spending the week in Gatlinburg, helping the community recover with our tourism dollars and having a wonderful time. The White Oak Lodge and Resort is an excellent facility. Lots of little artisan shops and much to do in the area. A very family-friendly area. Great food in a multitude of dining locations. We highly concur with Global’s recommendation, using our membership on a number of occasions to come to Gatlinburg.
