We “Love” the Grand Prize Family & Friends Photo!

Garth and Sherlyn T. of Colorado are long-time members, and twice awarded with a prize in the Global Discovery Vacations annual Shoot for the Stars photo contest! This year, they take the top prize with their “I Love Global Travel” photo taken in Barbados. We spoke with Sherlyn to find out about the picture, and their Global Discovery Vacations condo vacation!

G: Where was the photo taken?

S: We took that picture on my birthday. We had gotten back from snorkeling with sea turtles. The two guys in the photo were great, they are locals who hang out at the beach playing chess.

G: What inspired the picture?

S:  It was more my husband’s idea. We wanted to take a picture for the contest. First we wanted to get a picture with this man we saw on the beach with a monkey. But we could never find him again.

G: What did you think about the snorkeling adventure?

S: It was really neat. We saw quite a few sea turtles and I got to touch one. The adventure company takes you to an area where they feed them. You can’t chase after them, but you can touch them if they swim by you. After the sea turtles, they took us to another location, like a staged ship wreck, to snorkel some more. There were thousands of different fish all around us.

G: What did you think about your condo?

S: The condo was nice, it was off the beach but had a pool. The room and everything was really nice; big and very clean. We’d go back again. We walked every morning to another location called the Beach House, it was beautiful. We would go to their restaurant and bar on the beach, use the pool and a lounge with a private entrance from the beach.

G: Who did you travel with?

S: It was just the two of us, but we met and befriended a lot of the locals. That’s what we like to do on vacation. We get to know the taxi drivers and locals around the area so we can find out what to do and where to go.

G: Do you have any recommendations for Global Discovery Vacations members who go to Barbados?

S: I do! There are some great local restaurants they have to try. One in particular was just unbelievable— Ragamuffins Bar & Restaurant. I’m not a seafood eater but they had this blackened red snapper fish that I, oh my goodness, I’d go back to Barbados just to eat that! And the cheesecake they served… it is made by a lady in her 80s or 90s, just unbelievable. The owner vacationed to Barbados 25 years ago and loved it so much he moved and opened the restaurant.  Another great spot to eat is Just Grillin’. They serve all sorts of different types of grilled fish. I really liked the salads with the fish. The prices were great, the food was great and the portions were good.

We jet skied for a couple of hours, riding up and down the coast line. There are beautiful resorts and homes along the coast, really enjoyed it. You can rent jet skis right on the beach.

The downtown Barbados shops are really cool. There are lots of little shops to walk through, really enjoyed that.

G: How often do you travel to the Caribbean?

S: We have been to the islands a lot. This was our first trip to Barbados. It’s one of the furthest Southern Islands, east of Venezuela.

G: Tell us a little about yourself and Garth.

S: We are both teachers. Garth is a retired teacher who substitute teaches. We enjoy riding our Harley motorcycles, going to the Sturgis Rally and telling our friends and family about our great trips we take through Global Discovery Vacations. We just celebrated our 12th wedding anniversary this past July. We’ve been on 16 trips with Global and each one has been memorable and we are always looking forward to the next trip.

G: What will you do with your $500 prize?

S: I’m not really sure but I’m excited to use it. We might use it on the Caribbean vacation we’re in the middle of planning. Or maybe we’ll also go on an Expressway.

G: We can’t wait to see where you go next, we’re sure you’ll be sending us photos for the next Shoot for the Stars contest!
