This Small German Village Could be the Vacation of a Lifetime

When is a trip worth planning three years in advance? When it is for an event that happens every 10 years. The Oberammergau Passion Play is just such an occasion.

Held in a small Bavarian village 60 miles from Munich, this play depicts the life and death of Jesus, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors every decade. The novelty of such an event puts tickets and tours at a premium. But with Global Connections Inc. and Collette tours, you can see the momentous performance in 2020 while touring the splendid surrounding areas.

You can choose from three distinct tour options, each with its own focus. Though itineraries aren’t final yet, here’s a sample outline of what you can expect (besides the Passion Play, of course!):

About the Play

The tradition started in the early 1600s when the Bubonic Plague took a heavy toll on Europe’s populace. Seeking divine intervention, the people of Oberammergau asked God to spare them and, in return, they would enact a Passion Play every 10 years. As legend goes, no one suffered from the plague after that prayer, so Oberammergau has kept its promise to this day.

A few more facts:

  • The performances last for several months, usually from May to October, five days per week.
  • To act in the play, you have to be an Oberammergau citizen.
  • The play involves more than 2,000 citizens (actors, singers, musicians, stagehands and more).
  • The show prides itself on authenticity. Men grow their beards out for a year or more and the costumes are handmade.
  • The play is in German, but that doesn’t stop travelers from all over the world marveling at the community’s production.
  • An estimated 750,000 visitors will attend the Passion Play in 2020.
