Take Time to Relax During the Holiday

With parties to attend, gifts to buy, bank balances to watch, trips to plan and everything else that goes with the holidays, it doesn’t hurt to slow your roll for a few moments so you can decompress and re-energize.

Whether you’re on vacation with Global Discovery Vacations or at home, holiday time can be stress time and you deserve a little down time. We found these quick fixes that can actually help.

Be Present

Instead of worrying about what happened yesterday or what’s coming tomorrow, take five minutes and focus on what’s happening right now. Notice how the air feels on your face and how your feet feel hitting the ground. Notice who is with you and think about what you’re doing right now. Enjoy the texture and taste of each bite of food. Focusing on your senses helps you appreciate the moment and feel less tense. Try to incorporate a few minutes of this into each day.

Decompress with Heat

Heat works wonders for an instant unwind. Whether it’s a Jacuzzi, heating pad or just sitting in front of a warm fire, heat relaxes muscles. After a long day of shopping, use a hot wrap or heating pad on your neck and shoulders or back. Close your eyes and relax your face, neck, upper chest and back muscles. This also works great if you’re having trouble sleeping.

Schedule Worry Time

If you find your thoughts racing at night or you’re having trouble sleeping because you just can’t stop thinking about everything going on, try scheduling some “worry time” during the day. Every day, take some time to identify, list and resolve what causes you stress or worry. In a second column, provide a few action items that will eventually take that stressor off your list.

Leave it to the Pros

When you just want to treat yourself, spend a day at the spa. A nice massage, aroma therapy or a detox will rejuvenate your body and spirit, and who doesn’t need a little more of that in their life? It’s nice to just let someone else take care of your needs while you’re trying to unwind from a stressful season.

You can’t pour from an empty cup, so be sure to take care of yourself so you’ll be in a better frame of mind to enjoy more this holiday season.
