Shoot for the Stars F&F Champs Channel U2

Music fans might notice some familiarity with this image. Inspired by U2’s 1987 album, Joshua Tree, Global Discovery Vacations members Daniel and Paige R. could think of no better way to capture their time in Joshua Tree National Park than by paying homage to their favorite band!

With artsy poses, stunning backdrop and using U2’s black-and-white composition, Paige tells us how her top Family and Friends Shoot for the Stars photo came to be!

What brought you to California for this trip?

That was the most beautiful park I’ve ever been to. We have five children now and our two middle ones are 17 and 18 and about ready to graduate. We’ve always wanted to go to California. The two-week trip that we took was the best chance we got. Our son, the older one in the photo, has joined the Air Force, and he’ll be leaving in May. We wanted one last trip with him.

What prompted the photo?

We tried to recreate the photo, but there was no Internet connection in that part of the park. So we did it from memory. My husband and I love U2 while my kids didn’t know what was going on.

What’s your favorite U2 song/album?

“Pride (in The Name Of Love).” They have the best concerts. My husband and I would travel just to see them. This was a long time ago – before we had a bunch of children. My kids enjoy classic rock. But U2, in our house, is modern rock by comparison.

How else did you spend your trip to California?

“Overlooking San Andreas Fault.” – courtesy of member Paige R.

We went to Sequoia National Forest and that was amazing. We had one week in Palm Springs and one week in Lake Tahoe and Los Angeles. We booked every single thing through Global Connections Inc. – the transportation, the hotel for a few nights in LA, everything. We spent time in Sacramento, had a day in San Francisco. Every day was something. It was the absolute best trip. No kinks, not a single issue.

The best part about the trip is that we just got to be with each other and enjoy each other. I love my family because we’re funny. We’re sort of an eclectic bunch. Our family motto is “Nothing beats a free tour” because that’s where the funny stuff is – Jelly Belly, Budweiser, whatever we find. That’s where you find passion. We also went on a tour of the California State Capitol.

How often do you travel?

My husband and I are both teachers and we also have a non-profit, so we have time to travel about five weeks a year. We’ll go to Gatlinburg for a long weekend. We’ll go to Cincinnati for a night, which is about an hour away. We’ve been to the Wisconsin Dells. We just like getting out and doing things. We’re going to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for a week around Thanksgiving. We are working the membership!

Have you decided how you’re going to use your $500 vacation credit?

The choices are endless. My goal is to allow my kids see as many things as they can before they leave. My oldest is 23 and our 17- and 18-year-olds are joining the military. When they leave, they are going to probably be gone for a while. But I love them. They are so awesome to hang out with and they are hilarious. I want to spend as many minutes as I can with them because I won’t know when they’ll come back. Time is so precious right now.

We hope that Paige and her family will take advantage of their winnings and enjoy a couple more trips together before her sons leave home!
