Member Monday: One Big, Happy Family in Hilton Head

Joe H. and his family finished 2014 in style by vising Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. After a week at the Royal Dunes Resort, Joe had a lot of great recommendations for fellow Global Discovery Vacations travelers in this week’s Member Monday!

Where would you recommend a fellow member to go to…
Eat
We were pleasantly surprised to find that grocery store prices were as good or better than back home. The ladies in our group love to cook and it made our vacation quite cost-effective.

We did discover a Chinese buffet called Yummy House that had excellent food. It’s not fancy, but the flavor of the food is superb and the price is right. It is on the main highway near the Mathews Drive intersection.

Shop
Our family enjoys thrift store shopping. There are several thrift stores on Hilton Head Island and another off the island in the Bluffton district. It’s on the main highway to the island.

Have fun/attractions
We found a fabulous putt-putt golf course called Pirate’s Island Adventure Golf that we really enjoyed as a family. We spent quite a bit of time playing together, pitting our skills against the course and one another.

Biking was another activity that I highly recommend here. There are excellent bike paths throughout the island and the sand on the beach is also a nice way to travel by bike. We rented bikes from Bubba’s Bike Rental – eight bikes for an incredible price. They also have superb customer service.

What was your favorite:
Resort/Condominium Amenity or Room
Very nice! This was our second vacation experience with Global Discovery Vacations. The resort at Hilton Head featured an outdoor heated pool and a hot tub, which our teenage children and younger child enjoyed. Heated or indoor pool amenities are needed to make the vacation enjoyable for the younger generation no matter where you go.

Place to go in the destination
Exploring the beach at low tide is always a pleasurable experience. You never know what treasures you may discover! Our first beach walk yielded 130 sand dollars. The excitement was contagious.

We also like the excursion over to historic Savannah, Georgia. It’s an easy 35-40 minute drive. We find Hilton Head Island to be a very relaxing and temperate place to hang out and yet be close to all the amenities we have come to appreciate at prices that are not inflated.

Why did you choose this destination?
We chose Hilton Head Island as our vacation destination because it is a reasonable day’s drive from where we live in northern Ohio and the temperatures at the end of the year are significantly better.

Any tips for a traveler to this resort or destination? Anything you think they should bring?
A GPS is a must-have tool when visiting Hilton Head Island. It is a very large island and the lighting is kept to a minimum out of respect for the sea turtles. Many shopping plazas are shielded by trees and vegetation. With the low lighting at night, it is easy to miss your turns without GPS guidance.

Gasoline prices were surprisingly lower than Ohio’s. This was another unexpected economic benefit.

About you

How many trips have you taken using your membership?
This was our first year as a Global Discovery Vacations member. Comparably, we are saving about $250 to $300 dollars per week on housing through GDV verses renting through VRBO because we are renting three-bedroom units to accommodate our family group. If we ever need a one-bedroom rental, the savings and selections would really multiply.
