Member Monday: The Heavenly Harbor of Ocean City, MD

Jennie L. has had her Global Discovery Vacations membership for a couple years, but because of a number of circumstances, she just recently took her first vacation. And going by her experience staying at Heron Harbour in Ocean City, Maryland, we’d say that it’s far from her last! She gives us some good travel tips in this week’s Member Monday.

Where would you recommend a fellow member to go to…
Eat
If you love seafood and can handle all you can eat, we definitely recommend Embers on 23rd street. When you are done eating, you can walk across the parking lot and enjoy some awesome putt putt.

If you are not into all-you-can-eat or seafood, try Tequila Mockingbird, which is just a short walk away on 130th street. You can bask in a fish bowl margarita and some yummy queso dip and a taco salad.

There is also Big Pecker’s, near 73rd street. This is a nice atmosphere with good food for the laid back kind of person. They even offer big swings to sit at for a nice dinning experience on the patio.

Shop
Well, I am not much of a shopper and this is the one area where my husband does not play the shopoholic role. But Sunsations has a nice variety of sun dresses and souvenirs. The Roses Store in Ocean City is not only huge but it has a ton of souvenirs, beach needs and items for light grocery shopping.

Have fun/attractions
Though we did not do much of this during our stay, I can certainly recommend the pier at the inlet. They have a ton of activities for kids and adults. The pier offers the SkyWheel, arcades and rides of all kinds. The Ripley’s Believe it or Not museum is also a great must-see at least once while you are there.

What was your favorite:
Resort/Condominium Amenity or Room
The awesome pool area that featured two different swimming pools and a kids pool. One pool was specific for those who do laps and the other pool was for goofing around and having fun. I am a tanner, so anything in the sun where I can relax is my cup of tea.

Why did you choose this destination?
We chose this location because it was close to home and we just wanted a quick getaway to spend some time together away from our everyday routine.

Who did you travel with?
My husband.

Were you traveling for a special occasion? If yes, what?
My husband travels a lot, so we were celebrating our one year anniversary, Valentine’s Day and his birthday.

What was your favorite memory of your vacation?
Just having some alone time with my husband away from the house.

Any tips for a traveler to this resort or destination? Anything you think they should bring?
You can never remember to pack everything for a vacation. The best thing to do is just go with the anticipation that you will have fun relaxing and enjoying the time alone or with your family. You can always go to a store to buy what you forget.

Tanning is a big part of my summer fun so, if you are like me, remember your ALOE! It is more expensive out there because they know you will pay the money for it. I know, because I forgot mine and had to buy some after being in the sun.

If you are short on funds, this place has a full kitchen. When I say full, I mean full. They provide a Crock-Pot, blender, coffee pot, dishes and so on. Bring your cooler full of food so you are not eating out all day, everyday. This will help you save money, especially if you are traveling with kids. I recommend taking as many groceries as possible since prices around the beach tend to be a bit higher. Again, don’t worry if you forget something, there is a grocery store down the street (walking distance).

If you have bicycles, take them. You can take a tour around the compound and view the great scenery and awesome houses. Not to mention you can bike to shops and restaurants close by, which will save on gas and the headache of crazy drivers and traffic lights.

The rental company also provides you with a TON of coupons when you check in. Take advantage of them to help save money. They offer coupons for Embers, putt-putt golf, boat rides and fishing trips, to name a few. The rental property states they provide a starter set of paper products, but bring some extra toilet paper and napkins just in case. Also, take some laundry detergent and dryer sheets.

About you

How long have you been a Global Discovery Vacations member?
We have been members since 2012.

Why did you join the club?
We like knowing that we can get a nice resort style vacation for a great deal. This past trip was just a great example as to the savings we received by being members.

What is your profession?
Executive Assistant.

How many trips have you taken using your membership?
This has been our first of many trips. We have had a busy lifestyle since we became members. The year we joined we finished planning our wedding, then the following year we got married, moved into our new house, went on our honeymoon (which was planned before we had this) and then my husband changed jobs to where he travels a lot. After this adventure, we made a promise that we were going to use our vacation club a lot more in the coming years.

  1. We purchased our membership several years ago and finaly began to use it this year. We have gone skiing for a week to Banf Canada, swimming for a week in Ocean City, Maryland and soon I’ll be scuba diving for a week amongst the reefs by the Grand Cayman Island. All in all, the three weeks of vacation are costing me only $1,000 plus airfare. I’m certain that I’ve saved well over my initial membership costs already!
