Member Monday: Katie P. Found Amore in Italy!

Mark and Katie P. took a holiday break from the states and headed to the unforgettable beauty of Italy with Global Discovery Vacations. Staying in the Villa Il Poggiolo near Siena, their family had access to everything you would want to do in the area. They share with us in this week’s Member Monday.

Where would you recommend a fellow member to go to…
Eat
It is difficult not to eat one’s way through the country with all the scrumptious dishes of pasta, wood-fired pizzas, and gelato at every turn. Though our daughter studied Italian for this trip, everything was in English and easy to understand, including the menus.

Have fun/attractions
This time of year is super for avoiding the crowds but not freeze while out exploring. We were able to experience the Italian Christmas markets and fairs everywhere we went and it was wonderful to enjoy this with the Italians!

What was your favorite:

Resort/Condominium Amenity or Room
Located in a wee village of Costalpino just three kilometers outside of Siena in Tuscany, Italy, Luigi (owner/manager) welcomed us to the Villa, which his family has owned for centuries.

Luigi welcomed us with bottles of white and red wine grown from his own vineyards as well as the Sienna area specialty cookies. Upon leaving, he also presented us with a canister olive oil from this orchards. A very Tuscan experience shared with a new found friend.

Place to go in the destination
The location was perfect for day trips. We explored Pisa, where my husband and son climbed the Leaning Tower. We spent a day driving Tuscany, finding medieval-walled villages with no other tourists in sight.

We left our hearts in Florence as we discovered it’s beauty through the architecture, museums, and watched the sunset from the Ponte Vecchio bridge. We were amazed at the Cathedral in Sienna and found the expansive market where the annual Palio is held in summer.

Why did you choose this destination?
We chose Villa Il Poggilio because of the amenities and location. My husband and I knew we had the right place when our teenagers said they didn’t want to leave! We wanted to explore.

Any tips for a traveler to this resort or destination? Anything you think they should bring?
As we were in Europe, we knew to bring our own washcloths (as they are considered very personal items) , and that dryers are not the norm. Our stay included a laundry room with a washer in our cottage and all the laundry soaps you could imagine, provided by Luigi. There is a large drying rack available upon which to hang your clothing. There is salt, pepper, olive oil, and other items included which was very handy for meals.

One can also get around with public transportation, but a car with a GPS is really the best thing to have for exploring when you want. Parking is perfect and very secure since we were given our own key to the gates that allowed us inside to the villa. No one may enter without a key or Luigi allowing them in from the inside. That kind of security is not needed as it’s very safe, but comes with a villa property filled with antiques and rich history.

About you

How long have you been a Global Discovery Vacations member?
This was our eighteenth trip with Global since we joined in 2006. We were not disappointed! We discovered why everyone loves Tuscany so much, and with this central location, it’s easy to see every bit of it and still leisurely enjoy an evening in our home away from home.
