John M. has seen the beauty of the Caribbean from a distance, but now that he’s a Global Discovery Vacations member, he can finally see many of the islands up close. His first stop: the Royal Islander La Page at Maho Beach. Read about it in this week’s Member Monday!
Where would you recommend a fellow member to go to…
Up behind the Casino Royale is a stretch of somewhat hidden restaurants but, for us, the French restaurant Moulin Fou was excellent. The décor is warm and inviting and the staff is very friendly. We enjoyed it so much we returned the following night. It’s slightly higher priced than some but worth it.
Right outside the resort is a casino, several restaurants, shops and a local grocery store everyone uses. We highly recommend Cheri’s Cafe next to the casino. They have almost nightly shows that are enjoyed while you are eating and don’t cost anything extra.
The beach next to the resort is a hot spot for everyone, including people who stop for a cruise excursion in St. Maarten. The highlight is the beach at the end of the airport runway. The planes take off and land at that location so very close to the beach and everyone takes pictures.
Some daring people grab hold of the fence at the end of the runway (signs declare the danger involved in doing it) when a plane is about to takeoff and enjoy (maybe?) the thrusts of the engine blast as they take off. It’s a sight to see. The arrival and takeoffs can also be seen from the resort.
What was your favorite…
We loved the resort and plan to return sometime in the future, but not before we travel throughout the Caribbean using Global. Everyone at the resort and in St. Maarten was friendly and helpful.
Place to go in the destination:
Why did you choose this destination? Were you traveling for a special occasion?
We cruise often and have stopped at St. Maarten many times. When I saw that I could spend a week using Global, I jumped in along with four friends of mine who are also in the club.
We chose Royal Islander La Page at Maho Beach (there were also other locations we could have stayed at with Global) because of it’s location to the airport and the beach.
Any tips for a traveler to this resort or destination? Anything you think they should bring?
We took buses around the island which cost anywhere from one dollar U.S. to four dollars U.S. depending on the location. Everywhere we went, they took either U.S. dollars or credit cards. The taxis were inexpensive as well.
The island has a Dutch side (the resort is located on that side) and a French side. It’s not that big overall, so you can pretty much travel anywhere on the island for a small fee.
Why did you join the club?
I’m a retiree who had a friend that belonged to Global and introduced me to it. I was able to stay with him in a number of resorts and finally decided to purchase about a year ago. I initially purchased two star credits but added two more later on I liked it so much. I have enjoyed every one. Being retired and having the ability to travel at leisure is one of the reasons I joined Global.
How many trips have you taken using your membership?
I have traveled to Mexico, several locations in Florida and a stay in Georgia.
