Member Monday: Ditching the GPS in the Appalachian Mountains

On a recent trip to the mountains of North Carolina, Global Discovery Vacations members Scott and Joyce S. let nature be their guide as they traversed the luscious landscape in search of adventure. They share their vacation to the Appalachian Trail and Grandfather Mountain, among others, in this week’s Member Monday.

Where would you recommend a fellow member to go to…
Bella’s is a nice little Italian restaurant less than a mile from the resort. The food is excellent and the service is prompt and friendly.

Storie Street Grill in Blowing Rock is one of our favorite restaurants in the area. The food is great; I especially like the Monte Cristo Sandwich. We enjoy having lunch on their covered patio.

The Local in Boone is another great choice with a covered patio. The grown-up grilled cheese with fig and bacon paired with the she-crab soup is a perfect lunch.

There is a Food Lion and a Lowes Foods within a mile of the resort.

Downtown Blowing Rock has lots of great little shops and a Tanger Outlet Mall nearby.

Have fun/attractions:
Grandfather Mountain is a great family adventure. Be sure to check out the view from the Mile High Swinging Bridge!

Scott on Profile Trail.

There are a lot of hiking trails in the area. One of our favorites is Profile Trail, which is less than two miles from the resort. We also enjoy hiking on the Appalachian Trail and there are several access points in the surrounding area.

I highly recommend driving around the area and trying to get lost! This is a great way to learn the area and you will see some beautiful mountain scenery. If you have to use navigation to find your way back, then you did a great job!

What was your favorite…
Resort/Condo Amenity:

Blue Ridge Village is one of our favorite resorts, and somehow they keep finding ways to improve it!

The paddle boats, playground and mini-golf give the kids (grandkids in our case) a lot to do! The resort hosts a lot of activities; our favorite is hot dogs and s’mores at the fire pit.

Place to go in the destination:
Mount Mitchell State Park is about an hour and a half away but worth the drive. We hiked up the Old Mitchell Trail and down the Commissary Trail for a nice four-mile hike.

Why did you choose this destination?
This is our favorite area of the North Carolina Mountains. There are many great hiking opportunities, beautiful scenic drives, breathtaking mountain views and plenty of amazing places to eat.

View from the Mount Mitchell observation deck.

What was your favorite memory of your vacation?
The reward for hiking up Mount Mitchell is to stand on the observation deck and admire the views! The observation deck is also accessible by a short walk from a parking lot.

Any tips for a traveler to this resort or destination? Anything you think they should bring?
If you like to hike or fish, there are ample opportunities so be sure to bring your gear.
