Member Monday: David A. Proposed to His Girlfriend on a Dog Sledding Expedition with Global Discovery Vacations

Member Monday: David A. proposed to his girlfriend during a dog sledding expedition on his Global Discovery Vacations adventure! We asked him to share some highlights from his very special trip.

Why did you choose Christie Lodge for your vacation and proposal?
I lived and worked in Beaver Creek for two years. I knew about Christie lodge but I had never been inside. It’s WAY bigger inside than what it appears on the outside.

How did you come up with the proposal idea?
I actually just knew I was going to propose, I had no idea how I was going to do it. I had the ring and a gut full of nervousness. It just kinda came to me as we looked at the concierge wall of pamphlets at the resort.

What was your finance’s reaction?
She said YES of course! Then she asked me if I was going to put the ring on her finger because I was still frozen in the moment with nerves.

Will you honeymoon using your membership benefits?
Yes! We already have two weeks booked in Hawaii. One week on Oahu and the other week on Kauai.

Any idea when you’ll marry?
Wedding is September 13, 2013 and we honeymoon in Hawaii September 27 through October 11.

Where would you recommend a fellow member go for:

Breakfast: L Cantina for breakfast burritos at the base of Beaver Creek where the bus stop is located right before the walkover bridge.

Lunch: Coyote Cafe, the locals call it the Yotee.

Dinner: Bob’s Place in Avon is good food, well priced and more locals go there. It is good to go where the locals go because they will guide you to the events happening in town the week you are there; free concerts and shows. Taco Tuesdays is at Lava across from the bear lot. You must eat a Larkburger from Larksburger in Edwards, best burger ever. And Buffalo Burger from the Dillon Dam Brewery in Dillon which is off I-70 on the way to Avon from Denver, right before Breckenridge. If you go during the week it is only about 45 minutes from Christie Lodge and has Outlet Mall shopping.

To Shop: For gear you should go to MSO Mountain Sports Outlet; best price, great warranty and local discounts. They have a shop in Dillon/Silverthorne and also one in Glenwood Springs which is where Doc Holiday is buried! You have to hike to get to his cemetery and memorial.

To have fun/attractions: Dog sledding of course! And you have to plan a Hot Springs trip. Glenwood is closer but if you make the trip to Steamboat Springs, Strawberry Park is well worth it—more secluded, private, and romantic.

Resort Amenity: Indoor and outdoor hot tubs with outdoor fire pit.

Place to go in the destination: Strawberry Park Hot Springs, Steamboat Springs and Goodtime Adventures in Breckenridge for affordable Dogsledding.

Any tips for a traveler to this resort destination? Go to the Coyote Cafe or the Dusty Boot from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. All the ski patrol and mountain workers go there. You get great service and a little bit of the local brew.

You can get free, fresh baked chocolate chip cookies at 3:00 p.m. at the base of the mountain and free champagne at 3:30 p.m. at the deck of the Chop House restaurant  -also located at the base of the mountain. Sign up for EPIC MIX while you are there, you can take pictures and track your vertical feet traveled. It’s pretty sweet.

Any tips for a traveler staying in this condominium? Use the resources around you! Concierge, locals, etc.

Be willing to start the day early. The sun goes down around 4:00 or 5:00.

Drink water, you are in the mountains and the best way to not get those headaches is to stay hydrated and drink a ton of water the first two days you are there. Drink even if you are not thirsty, you will thank me when you don’t get the mountain migraine that gets someone on the trip, usually pretty bad.

The Hanging Lake in-between Avon and Glenwood Springs is the most romantic place on earth. It’s an athletic hike but well worth it and done in the summer!

How long have you been a Global Discovery Vacations member?  Since 2004

Why did you join the club? Love vacations and love to travel. This makes it affordable to go places I otherwise would not be able to afford, and has lead me to places I dream about. Dreams do come true as long as you have Global Discovery Vacations to help them along!

What is your profession? Management and sales of rental cars.

How many trips have you taken using your membership? So many, I have taken trips and sent family on honeymoons as wedding gifts. I have been to Colorado every year for a Snowboarding trip and I’ve taken a father/son trip to Panama City Beach for my birthday. Enjoyed it so much I took my dad and my sister and her four children to see the ocean for the first time! I have been all over Florida, every coast and almost every resort down there. I sent cousins, brothers and sisters all over, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Grand Caymen Islands, Aruba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Florida, Tennessee, Colorado, California and even Ohio.  I even used my Elite Concierge service for a limo rental when I was at a party in Louisville, KY! I love my membership, the people who provide excellent customer service behind the scenes and the locations and resorts that are chosen all over the globe! This product paid for itself in my first two trips and I think that my family has almost 20 vacations under our belts.
