Global Discovery Vacations Review: NASCAR Week in Las Vegas

Global Discovery Vacations Members Shawn and Cleo M. recently had a vacation fit for the most die-hard NASCAR fans while celebrating their wedding anniversary. Their first race of the season was in Las Vegas, Nevada, where they stayed at the fabulous WorldMark Las Vegas – Tropicana. Even Richard Petty makes a pit-stop in this week’s Member Monday!

Where would you recommend a fellow member to go:
We visited the Las Vegas Motor Speedway all weekend and also had a very fancy sit-down dinner at the Eiffel Tower Restaurant at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel and Casino. We tailgated at the track (like most race car fans do).

The Eiffel Tower restaurant was a very romantic setting, several stories above the Strip, where you had a view of the Bellagio fountains show from your table. The food was a little pricey, but well worth it. The portions were very generous for the price, and we all left full! You can’t say that about a lot of higher end restaurants. The service was amazing and the lighting inside was dimmed and very romantic. It was an anniversary dinner that I will never forget.

Afterwards, we took the elevator up almost to the top of the tower to the observation deck. You have to pay extra for this, but both our spouses were veterans and they got in free, so it was really reasonable. It had a wonderful view of Las Vegas at night from above.

What was your favorite…
Resort/Condo Amenity:
I loved that the condos are always fully stocked with everything we needed to keep our food stored and cooled all weekend. We were able to cook breakfast early in the mornings and pack up our ice chests each day with everything we needed. Then, after a long day at the track, we could come back and dip in the pool or Jacuzzi.

Why did you choose this destination? Were you traveling for a special occasion?
We traveled to Las Vegas with the purpose of going to the NASCAR races and to celebrate our 18th wedding Anniversary.

What was your favorite memory of your vacation?
We spent nearly all our time at the track, but we had a blast. There were tons of vendors selling memorabilia and food. Lots of free giveaways and drawings were at every turn.

My absolute favorite thing that happened all weekend is that we got to meet NASCAR driving legend Richard Petty! The KING! For the average person who doesn’t know anything about NASCAR, it means nothing. But if you know who he is, it is a HUGE deal.

This is as close as member Cleo M. could get to NASCAR legend Richard Petty.

Sadly, however, I did not get his autograph. His handlers pushed me out of the way as they whisked him away in his golf cart. But it was an amazing moment nonetheless.

Did you travel with anyone?
Our best friends of almost 18 years, TJ and Sheree, go with us everywhere. They went to Hawaii with us and Italy last year. It was a trip of a lifetime!

They loved all the condos and amenities so much that after three years of traveling with us, they finally joined in December. They will be taking their family of eight to Disney World in May. It’s a dream trip they have wanted to do their entire lives and Global finally made it come true for them! It would not have been affordable before then. They are super excited!

Any tips for a traveler going to this resort or destination? Anything you think they should bring?

  • We try to book our vacations for the entire year in advance. This helps to save money needed for plane tickets and other expenses over time instead of having to charge a bunch of stuff on credit cards. I try to pay cash for everything.
  • Travel with friends. It helps cut down costs, including rental cars if need be. Arrange everything needed for your trip between each other. Generally between the two families everything is usually all provided for.
  • Bring food and anything else you might need when away from your condo with you. On all our trips to Hawaii, we always bring portable coolers in our luggage and ice packs to keep drinks cool on our long drives and picnics.
  • Bring your own coffee and to-go mugs so you don’t have to purchase coffee on all your early days out the door for all the fun excursions you have planned.
  • Anything you can think of to save yourself a few dollars over the week so you can spend that money elsewhere. It adds up!

About You

I am a caregiver of people with disabilities of 15 years, and my husband works in the automotive field and is also a professional driver for Fed Ex.

How long have you been a Global Discovery Vacations member?
We joined in the spring of 2014.

Why did you join the club?
We literally were getting ready to leave on an Alaskan cruise. We had saved up and already paid cash in full. We joined simply because it was foolish not to! The amount we had just spent on our cruise and flights is what it cost us to join!

It paid for itself the very first trip we took with the club. We were already paying that money out every year to travel. It cut out all the time it took me to find the cheapest place to stay and cheapest flights.

Global’s amazing customer service always helps me find the best deals on flights and the condo is always very nice and the price is unbeatable. What we pay for a week’s stay in a condo you could barely pay for a night’s stay in an average hotel.

How many trips have you taken?
We’ve taken seven trips or so already, both in and outside of the country. We have never had a bad experience.

Why did you think traveling is so important?
Traveling is such a good way to refresh and decompress from all the hard work you put in year after year with your job. For us as empty nesters now, it’s like a second honeymoon! We have enjoyed every bit of our travel experiences with Global. I tell people all the time about how amazing it is.
