Global Discovery Vacations Review: Hawaii Sweeter the Second Time

Hawaii gives off an inescapable aura to travelers – as if the islands were made for peace and relaxation. Having been there before, Global Discovery Vacations member Jody S. thought it was time for a return trip to Kauai. She gives us the scoop in this week’s Member Monday from her stay at Pono Kai.

“This was actually our second visit to the island but there were still places we wanted to explore. We loved how easy it was to get around the island and enjoy beautiful scenery everywhere we went.

This time however our condo opened up to the ocean. It was glorious and so relaxing to open the patio doors everyday to enjoy the view of the ocean, hear the waves lapping at the shore and feeling the cool ocean breeze.

The condo itself was very comfortable and had everything we needed. Truly our home away from home.”

Where would you recommend a fellow member to go to…
Eat:
Fast Food: The Shrimp Shack was delightful and had shrimp prepared several different ways – all delicious.

Fine Dining: We loved Sam’s Ocean View, not only for their wonderful cuisine but their service was perfect in every way. And best of all, we had an ocean view when dining and it was not far from the resort.

Reservations are recommended to get the best seating, although you can’t go wrong from any view.

Treats: Shaved ice with vanilla ice cream, strawberries and, of course, pineapple.

Shop:
There were little shops all along Kuhio Highway within walking distance of the resort.

Have fun/attractions:
Driving around the island, there are many sites to see and visit.

Waimea Canyon.

  • The most exquisite site was Waimea Canyon, also known as the Grand Canyon of Kauai. It is about an hour and half from Kapaa where we were staying.
  • Luau Kalamaku – wonderful show and great Hawaiian food for a fair price. Must have reservations.
  • Fern Grotto
  • Wailua Falls
  • Manawaiopuna Falls (Jurassic Park Falls)

What was your favorite…
Resort Amenity:

Ocean view from patio.

  • The customer service and concierge service was wonderful and everyone was so accommodating and friendly.
  • Loved the pool and hot tub – they were never crowded.
  • Had a guest room where we could stay and relax until we had to leave for the airport (rather than having to hang out at the airport).
  • Herb garden and koi pond.
  • How about everything?

Place to go in the destination:
The open-air markets:

  • Fresh fruit, produce, home-cooked food and bakery items.
  • Incredible artisans: handmade jewelry, artwork, photography, pottery and so much more.

Plan on going to several markets and check with the concierge for days and times. There was one right across the street from the resort and it was incredible.

Why did you choose this destination? Were you traveling for a special occasion?
Our first real vacation together without kids was to Hawaii. It was our favorite vacation ever and just felt magical. We have tried to return yearly since we like to visit when it is winter at home because we can enjoy the warmth and beauty of the island and truly get away from it all.

What was your favorite memory of your vacation?
Just sitting on the beach with my sweetie enjoying the view and sounds and smell of the ocean. So relaxing and peaceful.

Any tips for a traveler going to this resort or destination? Anything you think they should bring?

  • Bring a happy attitude and plan to have a lovely time.
  • Wear comfortable shoes or sandals.
  • Bring a lightweight jacket for cool nights.

About you

How long have you been a Global Discovery Vacations member?
About 15 years.

Why did you join the club?
Loved the concept of being able to choose when we wanted to go on vacation and the variety of places that we could go to. We also loved that we could afford to go on vacation through our membership.

How many trips have you taken using your membership?
Have used all five weeks yearly for the past 10 years. Some vacations used up two weeks, so it would be safe to say we’ve gone on 20-plus vacations including the ones my kids used.

Why do you think traveling is important?
We need to get away to rest and relax and enjoy quality time together. It also gives us the opportunity to have new and exciting experiences and to make wonderful memories.

Additional Comments:
We have had Global Discovery Vacations for at least 15 years and it was the best investment ever. We have traveled everywhere using our resort weeks as well as last-minute deals.

We took the entire family of 26 people to Florida and used our five weeks for two condos in Orlando that were side by side. Had the best family vacation imaginable and the accommodations were amazing. It was only 15 minutes from Disney World and it had plenty of room for all of us.

My kids have used a week here and there to go to California, Florida, Las Vegas and other destinations.
