For many aviation buffs, the Blue Angels are must-see entertainment. These acrobatic pilots fly planes near Mach 1 speeds, performing barrel rolls and “Sneak Passes” for onlookers on the beach of Pensacola, Florida. Global Discovery Vacations member Dale V. visited the area recently to get a glimpse of the talented pilots while enjoying the surrounding beaches. He tells us all about in this week’s Member Monday!
Where would you recommend a fellow member go to…
My wife and I are not big restaurant people. Most of our meals where eaten in the condo or on the beach. We like to pack a lunch and head down to the ocean and set up our chairs and relax. We will break out the lunch around noon, which is usually a ham sandwich and some chips (maybe a candy bar or two!).
We might get a pizza once in a while for supper, or else we would make something in the condo.
A good place to shop is at Pier Park, which was about five miles from our condo. There was a great movie theater, so I saw a movie while my wife shopped in all the stores.
This shopping site has something for everyone, from big-name retailers to little shops.
There is a little amusement area down the street from the condo, it has some rides that I could not handle anymore at my age.
About five miles from this condo is a state park, which is a great place to go. We rode our pedal bike there, which was a nice flat ride and it had sidewalks. The state park is where all the locals go surfing, so if there are any waves, you will see surfers there. It is also a very nice beach to walk on!
What was your favorite…
They have a great pool, I especially love the zero entry.
This resort (Boardwalk Beach Resort in Panama City) was one of the most beautiful resorts we have been at!
Place to go in the destination:
If you are a golfer, there is a golf course right across the street, although the club house is around the corner.
You can also have a dolphin experience at Gulf World Marine Park.
Why did you choose this destination? Were you traveling for a special occasion?
I chose this location so that I could go see the Blue Angels practice. It’s about a two-hour trip to get to Pensacola, but if you like the Blue Angels, it is worth the time. You are right on the flight line and it is free to get in, plus there is a great aircraft museum there!
After the show, you can get your picture taken with the pilots, and they will autograph whatever you bring to them. My wife bought me a hat, so I had all the pilots sign it.
What was your favorite memory of your vacation?
Besides the Blue Angels, I would have to say walking on the beach. My wife and I would walk the beach at least three times a day, about 3/4 mile one way. I also fly remote control airplanes, so I took a plane made out of foam and flew it on the beach. In October, it is not busy on the beach and there is plenty of area to fly.
Any tips for a traveler going to this resort or destination? Anything you think they should bring?
Bring lots of sunscreen.
How long have you been a Global Discovery Vacations member?
We have been members for 11 years.
Why did you join the club?
When we went to our meeting, I had no intention of joining. But after seeing the way they did things, I thought it would fit well with how we travel. Plus I told my wife, if we don’t sign up for this, we will never get to Hawaii (where my wife always wanted to go). So we bought into it and I think we have been to Hawaii four times now, always for two weeks each trip.
How many trips have you taken using your membership?
In the 11 years that we have been with Global, I believe we have taken more than 35 trips. I’ve actually lost count.
Why do you think traveling is important?
I don’t really subscribe to the fact that traveling is important to everyone, some people just like to stay around home. But for my wife and I, it’s a time to get away and have fun away from the pressures of the job. Many times we have taken our kids on these trips and it has been great. It’s just nice to get away for a week or two.
