Global Discovery Vacations Review: Skiing in Steamboat Springs, CO

When we last caught up with members John and Kim P., they were spending Thanksgiving in Colonial Williamsburg. They give us a change of scenery in this week’s Global Discovery Vacations Member Monday, going halfway across the country to Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Hear about their ski-filled stay at Legacy Vacation Resort  – Hilltop as John gives us a detailed rundown.

Where would you recommend a fellow member to go to…
There are lots of great restaurant choices in downtown Steamboat Springs. Two of my favorites are:

  • The 8th Street Steak House, where you can choose your steak and grill it on their gas-fired grill.
  • O’Neil’s Tavern and Grill, where the fish and chips or the corned beef on rye are big hits.

They both have an excellent draft beer selection from local breweries.

The shopping in Steamboat Springs is plentiful. I enjoyed browsing at F.M. Light & Sons, who had the best selection of cowboy hats and clothing.

Have fun/attractions:
The skiing at Steamboat Springs was excellent. There are so many options for skiers of all abilities. I enjoyed skiing the groomers on the front side as well as the glades on the back side. There are plenty of high-speed lifts to zoom you up the mountain and maximize your ski runs. The gondola is the quickest way to get to the top for first tracks in the morning.

The on-mountain dining facilities are excellent. If you need a break from the skiing, there are some nice hot springs just outside of town for a nominal fee.

The Steamboat Winter Carnival in action.

Since I was there during the 104th Winter Carnival, the weekend entertainment was lots of fun. During the day, there were horse-drawn skiers from kids and teens running the slalom course on a snow-packed main street, performing tricks and jumps. At night, the torchlight skiing, ski jumping, and fireworks were a must see. The fireworks were as extensive as any major city’s July 4th celebration.

What was your favorite…
Resort/Condo Amenity:

The Legacy Hilltop is a very nice choice that is convenient to the ski area and downtown. The shuttle provides easy access to the main ski area without the hassle of driving a cold car, finding a parking spot, putting on ski gear and finally getting to the slope.

The morning coffee in the lobby, ski lockers and evening hot tub & pool times made the ski vacation a daily enjoyment.

Place to go in the destination:
Be sure to visit downtown Steamboat and the hot springs, even if the Winter Carnival is not in session.

Why did you choose this destination? Were you traveling for a special occasion?
I chose this location because I had never skied Steamboat Springs and it was on my skiing bucket list.

What was your favorite memory of your vacation?
Skiing with the 70+ Ski Club. That included skiing with Mack, an 87-year-young skier going down High Noon – a blue groomer!

Any tips for a traveler going to this resort or destination? Anything you think they should bring?
Staying at Legacy Hilltop is not ski-in/ski-out, but the shuttle service is almost as convenient. Be sure to check out the ski valet service at Steamboat base if you prefer not carrying your ski from shuttle to gondola. At $5 a day, it may be worth the fare.

If you plan to lounge around the base area and enjoy a cold one after skiing, be sure to get there around 3:30 p.m. at the latest – Adirondack chairs are plentiful, but they go quickly.

About you

My wife and I started our retirement a year ago and enjoy having more time to travel. I was a mechanical engineer and she was a finance manager.

How long have you been a Global Discovery Vacations member?
We joined Global Discovery Vacations in May 2015 after several conversations with some friends, who are also members.

Why did you join the club?
We joined because we want to travel and prefer to stay in condos instead of hotels. We have friends that have been Global members for several years and both families recommend Global as a great way to travel economically and with flexibility.

How many trips have you taken using your membership?
Believe it or not, we just completed our 11th week of vacationing with Global.

Why do you think traveling is important?
Since retiring, we will be able to visit the many places on our bucket list. I enjoy skiing out west and Global continues to offer several excellent options for skiing the Rocky Mountains.

My wife prefers the warmer climates and the many options for traveling south to Florida and the Carolinas in the winter as Global members is ideal.
