Did You Know?
On this day in history, September 5, 1847, famed outlaw Jesse James was born in Kearney, Missouri. Following a tumultuous childhood and service in the Civil War, Jesse and his brother Frank grew bored with their Missouri farmer roots and joined a band of roving thieves.
The James brothers staged the first daylight bank robbery in U.S. history in 1866, and would go on to steal thousands more from banks, stores, stagecoaches, and trains over the next decade. Jesse James was quite the polarizing figure, revered by some as a romantic Robin Hood and feared by others as a vicious criminal.
Despite its sometimes violent past, the romanticism and excitement of the Wild West has been preserved or recreated in some of Global Discovery Vacations’ best Western destinations.
